What Comes Around--

Do you remember the clothing worn in the '70's? Are you from that generation?  I am. We wore hush puppy, or earth shoes, silk shirts (alot of times with ferns or plants on them), and a matching pants/coat combo. Most of our pants were bell-bottoms, flared widely to cover our shoes. It was the style of the times. The length was critical, as, if they came too far up the shoe, you looked dorky (a word from that time period).  If they dragged the ground, it was considered uncool. They had to be just right. If it was perfect, when you stood straight, the bell-bottoms would completely cover the shoe, to the point where they couldn't be seen, and were a quarter inch off the ground. In the style of Saturday Night Fever. The hair was usually long, and many times feathered back (both guys and girls).  My mother still has pictures of me during that time period.  I don't even recognize myself. My hair was shoulder length blonde, parted in the middle, and feathered back on both sides.  And it had to"look" just right! If the part was too wide, you became a geek (another word that started in that time period). Of course, Afros were in style them, too. Glasses were normal then, and not considered goofy (another word). Obviously they didn't have contact lenses then. If you had all this right, then you were cool! Bead  or shell necklaces were a plus. The shirt was open widely to reveal as much chest as possible. We wore cut-off jeans or shorts with holes in them (strings hanging down). We wore old sneakers (all that was available to us at the time (Pro-Keds, high-tops, etc..). They were almost all high-tops then. Lo- top shoes were considered bad because they caused too many ankle injuries.
I know some of you are smiling right now thinking of that time, and what you dressed like. Then the styles went totally away from all this, which is very natural, as every generation wants their own style, and does not want to be part of the status quo. They all think (like we did) that they are starting something new and cool and different. Tight pants became a trend, sometimes the tighter the better. Blue jeans went from slightly flared to no flare at all (even tighter on the bottom that normal). Silk shirts were gone, and polo shirts came in, both collar and collar-less. Glasses were out, as contacts came in. Glasses were too nerdy. Basically, all the stuff our generation wore was considered out dated and old fashioned. Afros have practically disappeared, in exchange for a cleaner, more professional look.
So here we are at the present time, and many of you know what I'm going to say. The "newest" generation thinks they are starting something fresh. Their new styles are flashy, flared, and bold. Sound familiar? Pants are again being flared out. Tight blue jeans are still in, only because they are considered sexy. Shell necklaces are considered cool again. Dress shirts are silky. Low-top tennis shoes were developed, and became popular the generation before this one.  Now they are back to wearing high-tops. Many pro basketball players prefer high-tops now, where as before, they wouldn't be caught dead in them. Short hair is still popular, because it looks cleaner.
I could do this all day, making comparisons between generations. But you can see the point. Things that were cool, then went to uncool, then back to cool. Things we did when we were young; cool and fresh to us; were then considered dated and old by the following generation. The another generation goes right back to some of the things we did already. And they think it's something new; that they started a new trend, when older people know the true already; "What Comes Around - - - Goes Around!"

It's a cool blue sky above!
